What to expect?

Receiving a wax treatment may seem like a scary process- there’s a certain level of discomfort and you might have to expose more vulnerable body parts. However, learning about the tools and waxing process will help put some of your anxieties at ease.

All waxing professionals on the Blys platform use a similar method of waxing. The type of hair and skin you have determines what kind of wax will be used for hair removal and maintenance- for thicker hair, hard wax is used and for sensitive skin, wax strips are usually recommended to avoid skin irritation.

Before, during and after

Before:

Before your waxing hair removal service, prepare by ensuring your skin is clean and free of any moisturiser, lotion or deodorant. It is recommended that you avoid using self-tanning products 24 hours before.

During:

Your waxing professional will begin by heating up the wax or preparing the wax strips (in the case of skin sensitivities). After applying the warm, melted wax to the desired area, a thin strip of fabric is applied on top, allowing for quick and easy removal of the wax, and your hair along with it! While there may be some discomfort during this process, it should not be a painful experience. If you are experiencing high levels of pain, you should alert your waxing professional and consult on the best course of action.

After:
  • Avoid hot showers and baths for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes
  • Avoid sweating or exercising
  • Avoid touching the waxed areas should also be avoided directly after treatment to prevent rash or skin irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for my waxing appointment?

All you need to do beforehand is pick the room you’d like to have your treatment in, clear 2x2m of floor space for your beauty therapist to set up their beauty bed and have a table nearby that they can use to lay out their products and tools.

How should I prepare for a wax treatment?

To get the most out of your wax, it’s important to prepare your skin and yourself ahead of time. Here are a few practical steps you can take to prepare ahead of your waxing session:

  • Let your hair grow out for at least four weeks to ensure your therapist can properly remove the hair from the follicle.
  • Gently exfoliate your skin a day or two before your appointment to flush away any dead skin cells.
  • Stay hydrated, avoid too much caffeine and alcohol in the days prior to your appointment and moisture your skin with non-clogging products that are lightweight and non-greasy.
  • Stay out of the sun and avoid getting sunburn in the days prior to your appointment.
  • Avoid using products with retinol on your skin the week prior to your appointment (as this can increase the sensitivity of your skin).
  • Wear lightweight, flowy clothing to your appointment that is easy to take on and off.

How long after waxing can I shower?

It is recommended to avoid hot showers and baths for at least 24 hours after getting a wax treatment.

Can I contact my provider prior to my appointment?

Yes! 48 hours prior to your booking start time, you will be able to message your provider using the chat function in the app. To access the chat function, open your app and head to the upcoming bookings page, select your booking and then click ‘message beauty therapist’.

Your provider will also have the ability to message you prior to your appointment to ask any questions they may have to ensure they can best prepare to achieve your desired results.

Can I choose my wax therapist?

Yes! You can browse beauty therapists in your area by heading to the provider directory and inputting your location and preferred service type into the search field.

From here you can click the individual provider listings to view their complete profile including their bio, reviews and rating.

Once you’ve chosen your preferred beauty therapist you can book them directly by clicking the ‘book’ button on their profile page.

If your selected beauty therapist isn’t available, we’ll prompt you to either reschedule to another time or select another beauty therapist in your area.

Can I get mobile waxing near me?

Of course you can! No waxing emergency needs to go unsolved – book a qualified beauty therapist to visit you at home, your hotel or even office space through Blys.

Does waxing hurt?

While waxing is significantly less painful than more invasive treatments like laser hair removal, there is still a low level of discomfort.

In most cases, waxing will feel like having a tough bandage ripped off a hairy part of your body. You might notice more pain if you’re getting waxed in more sensitive areas (such as your pubic region or under your arms).

However, the pain and discomfort are quick and temporary (although you might notice some redness, tenderness or irritation immediately after your waxing treatment).

Does waxing permanently remove hair?

No, waxing is not considered a permanent hair removal service but as hair follicles thin, it can become permanent for some. Hair grows back slowly over 3-6 weeks.

Is waxing or hair removal better?

Waxing is a form of hair removal, and is considered one of the best hair removal techniques for price, longevity of hairlessness, pain and maintaince.

What do you wear to a wax appointment?

With Blys, your wax appointment is in the comfort of your own home, so wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. It is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing, especially after your wax treatment to prevent any rash or irritation to the skin.

What happens in waxing?

Your waxing professional will begin by heating up the wax or preparing the wax strips (in the case of skin sensitivities). After applying the warm, melted wax to the desired area, a thin strip of fabric is applied on top, allowing for quick and easy removal of the wax, and your hair along with it! While there may be some discomfort during this process, it should not be a painful experience.

How can I care for my skin after a wax?

After your treatment, it’s best to avoid applying any oils or lotions to the waxed area (unless directed by your therapist). Keep your skin clean and avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing for at least 48 hours (like yoga pants or tights) that may cause irritation and friction on the skin.

Does bikini wax include privates?

No, a bikini wax only includes the border of where your bikini or underwear sits on the body.

What is G String wax?

A g-string wax is more commonly known as a bikini wax, and follows along the bikini line of your lower body.
